2012. január 22., vasárnap Happy new year of the dragon, especially to fellow dragons! (dragon and naga pics taken in Melaka, Penang, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Chiang Khong, Lamphun and Sop Ruak. all last year. I'm still in bed at the moment not sure I can make it to work tomorrow.) Füles [21:05] Mondj valamit 2012. január 20., péntek asszem erről megfeledkeztem korábban Füles [0:31] Mondj valamit 2012. január 18., szerda a sunny day on the border - or, Tuesdays are pink (Pratu Siam & Phu Chi Fa) today was the coldest day of the season so far - 12 degrees in the morning. in my room. maybe a bit more under the blankets. I was soaking up some sun (bright, warm, glorious sun!) at the playground in the afternoon (around 25 degrees, definitely not scorching heat) and it's funny how people reacted. farang boss, male: "are you feeling sick? you should go home" Thai boss, female: "are you crazy? sun gonna make you feel more sick" Thai girl, 9: "what you doing there? you want to skin black?" farang colleague, female: "good idea, I'll grab some coffee and be right here with you" Thai gardener, male: (doesn't speak just wants to adjust the sunbrella so that I'm in the shade) yes that's right, these stupid people (sorry.... but true) believe that if you catch a cold, you take antihistamines (wtf?), decongestants, cough syrups and of course something for the fever, even if you don't have one. hot soup, hot coffee, hot milk, hot clothing or hot sun are to be avoided at all costs. just remind me about the SUN when I am inevitably moaning about the weather in about 2.5 or 3 months from now, the hottest time of the year.   Füles [22:12] Mondj valamit village temple (right on the river) Füles [0:26] Mondj valamit 2012. január 16., hétfő ködös reggel a Mekong mentén és míg a kávémra várok, és a határőrök barbecue-ja felett melengetem a kezeim, kisüt a nap két órával később, a Pratu Siam kilátóból - a folyóvölgy ködben. valami diplomáciai huzavona folyamán a francia gyarmatbirodalom elszedte a hegygerinc és a folyó közti dzsungelt itt, úgyhogy ez itt mind Laosz, a határ átmegy a kilátón sajnos a Phu Chi Fa-ról már semmit nem láttam, thai oldal napos, Laoszban süvít a köd, felfele fújja a szél a többszáz méteres meredek sziklafalon, pont a határon, így de azért a fénykép miatt mindenki kimerészkedik a szélére, akár látszik valami, akár nem. sokan voltak a faluból szemetet szedni éppen, sok rendőr és turistarendőr is, akik rögtön rámzoomoltak. egész nap nem láttam más farangot. tourist police fazon pózol, szerintem átlógott már a határon :-) Füles [21:38] Mondj valamit 2012. január 15., vasárnap down by the Khong river from Sop Ruak to Chiang Khong - the Lao-Thai border view of 3 countries: that grassy triangle stretching towards the middle is actually a remote corner of Burma it is quite clear why the Chinese want to dam, dredge and destroy the whole thing: hardly navigable in the dry season, full of tricky rocks (all of which, along with the islands, belong to Laos). cannot send huge commercial ships up and down at all times. hope that the current resistance from countries downstream, especially Cambodia and Vietnam, whose livelihood and farmland depend on the river, will be successful in the long run and this won't be another sewage canal for the empire. Füles [23:14] Mondj valamit kids playing at the village square / market at Saam Yaek. the dog was pretty excited as well. usually I'm no good at taking photos of people because I don't want to approach them. but both these places with the market etc were actually set up for visitors. I'm not the kind of person who would stop in the small villages where I saw people entertaining friends and relatives, though I really wish I could be. Füles [0:29] Mondj valamit 2012. január 13., péntek csak sikerült ágynak esnem így a szezon vége felé közeledve lassan. három napos hétvége megint, és ki se látok a takonyból :-( még piac, még mindig Mae Salong. aszalt gyümölcsöt vettem, mint mindig a hegyekben. Füles [21:47] Mondj valamit 2012. január 12., csütörtök new year's day in Mae Salong village - there is a hilltribe festival going on at the local market. hundreds of families attended from the surrounding countryside. you cannot see the full costumes very often, only on special occasions. they are all handmade, you see women embroidering all the time at the markets or on their porches. they are in high demand even down here in Chiang Mai, hilltribe-inspired motifs and clothes. it is a fascinating crossroads of different cultures and languages, and there are still lots of remote villages completely cut off from "civilisation" and only accessible on foot. it does take a couple of days to get off the beaten track, but even these little villages just outside Chiang Rai are "real", people have kept their own languages and beliefs, though many of them have been converted to Christianity recently. poverty is still a huge problem.... of course :-( the area is famous for its unique oolong tea (the plants were imported straight from Taiwan) that thrives in this climate. it was originally introduced to replace the opium poppy fields of course. all the steep hillsides are cultivated, it is a stunning sight. it is a fantastic drive from the south, of course the Thais always follow the well-marked route from the north, so you can have the other road all for yourself, pretty much. it's the kind of area where casual tourists don't really get to, so people will presume you speak Thai and have been here for a while. unfortunately, the sakura blossoms had not consulted their calendars and were not ready yet for the new year, despite all the banners in the district advertising the festival with photos of trees in full bloom :-)   Füles [22:38] Mondj valamit 2012. január 11., szerda my other favourite Füles [22:04] Mondj valamit Régebbiek | Végére »
